Clinical drivers in modern medicine include the need by an ageing population for earlier detection and more effective therapies that are more personalized to the patient.  This in turn cascades requirements to advanced technology development of increasingly sensitive and specific tools for stratification, characterization, differential diagnosis, therapy planning, monitoring, and follow-up. 

In addition to direct uses in the clinic, increasingly powerful tools in the prediction and assessment of novel pharmaceuticals and therapeutics are also needed.  Important in the clinic, and absolutely critical in multi-center clinical trials, is the need for uniform outcome measures with known bias and variance across providers.  Technology issues such as reduction in variance, coupled with public-private partnerships and other venues for promulgation of appropriate standards are critical to advance the field.
